Why a separate line for internet and telephony?

Are you looking for a communication tool for your organization such as telephony? Then you’ve probably already done a lot of research. But what about the internet lines? Why should you choose a separate line for internet and telephony?

Do you want an answer to this question? Then read on below.

What is Hosted VoIP?

First we start with a short explanation of what ip telephony is exactly. VoIP (Voice over IP) is a technique that makes it possible to make telephone calls over an IP network. With Hosted VoIP (also called ‘cloud telephony’) from hallo, you get direct access to our IP network. Via an IP connection, you can use the virtual telephone exchange in our secure data center. This gives your company access to a fully-fledged and complete voice service with all the functionalities of an advanced telephone exchange for a relatively low investment amount.

What is Business Internet?

Business internet is almost the same as the internet you also have at home. The big difference is that you can count on your Service Level Agreement, an SLA, when there is a malfunction or problem going on. With an SLA N (next business day) you will be helped the next working day and with an SLA A (always) you will be helped the same day. This is in contrast to private internet where you are part of the crowd and it can take much longer before you are helped.

A line runs to your office via a district exchange and the type of connection matters how fast the connection is. For business use, you will have to take into account that you use much more bandwidth. Think of the many devices in the office such as laptops, tablets, printers and phones. Do you have many customers who use the internet at your location? Then make sure you have a Business Wi-Fi network with a separate guest log-in.

What kind of connection do you need?

To use Hosted VoIP and Business Internet you need an Internet Protocol line (IP line). So for both services you need the same kind of line. There are several lines available.

The type of line you can use for both telephony and internet are DSL and Fiber. Each type of line differs from each other due to different upload and download speeds.

DSL can be divided into 4 types:

  • ADSL maximum speed: Download 20 Mbps / Upload 1 Mbps
  • SDSL maximum speed: Download 2.3 Mbps / upload 2.3 Mbps (to be phased out in 2020)
  • VDSL maximum speed: Download 100 Mbps / upload 10 Mbps
  • BVDSL maximum speed: Download 200 Mbps / upload 20 Mbps
  • Fiber optic maximum speed: Download unlimited / upload unlimited

Depending on the size of your organization and the work you perform, you will look at which type of line best suits your organization. And suppose you choose fiber where you have almost unlimited bandwidth, why would you use a separate line for internet and telephony?

Hosted VoIP and business Internet over the same connection

In practice, you could use the same line for the two services. But it is not wise. Good accessibility is essential for an organization. In addition, you want your organization to radiate professionalism.

By running both services via the same line, you have a chance that the quality of Hosted VoIP will deteriorate considerably. This is because the voice packets that are sent during telephone calls get stuck behind other data packets. This causes tinny conversations where you can’t understand each other badly or not at all. These types of conversations sometimes occur when you call with apps such as Skype or WhatsApp.

To prevent this, we recommend using a separate line for internet and telephony. This way you are assured that the speech packets do not get stuck behind other, larger packages. In addition, it is possible to configure separate circuits on both fiber optic and DSL. The internet traffic and your telephony are therefore completely separate from each other and cannot influence each other.

The best is to test! So try our product for free, and make sure you have enough bandwidth.
